Arja Uusitalo (MD, PhD, Adjunct Professor) is a Medical Specialist of Sports and Exercise Medicine (1998) and Clinical Physiology and Nuclear Medicine (2003). She has worked in Research Institute for Olympic Sports (1993-1998), in University Hospitals of Kuopio, Tampere and Helsinki in summary for 16 years and in Universities of Jyväskylä and Helsinki as a senior researcher. She has acted as Professor of Clinical Physiology and Nuclear Medicine in University of Helsinki from August 2015 to December 2016. Her research interests focus on stress physiology, exhaustion and staleness, recovery, limits of physical performance, hormonal system and autonomic nervous system. Lately, she has also done research of athletes’ nutrition and relative energy deficiency. She has been working at FIOH since 8/2016 and in Helsinki Clinic for Sports and Exercise Medicine of Foundation for Sports and Exercise Medicine since 10/2017 as head physician. As a specialist of sports and exercise medicine she has worked with many sport teams (e.g. Cross Country Skiing, Gymnastic, Ice Hockey, Baseball, Track and Field athletics), acted as responsible physician in different sport competitions and done also antidoping work.
